My name is Penny Wilson, and I am a Registered Dietitian.  What does “Registered Dietitian” mean?  It means that I received a Bachelors of Science in Nutrition, completed an internship program and passed a national certification exam given by the American Dietetic Association.  I have a solid grounding in not only nutrition but also in how the human body works.  I have had experience in multiple settings working with many different people about their nutrition issues.

I have been working with, primarily, endurance athletes since before receiving my RD.  My clients include a variety of athletes including those walking their first marathon to experienced triathletes completing Ironman distance events.  I have also had the pleasure of working with a variety of people including Roberta Anding, the Dietitian for the Houston Texans.  I was also accepted into the Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH) Fellowship.  This Fellowship has provided me with experience in unique clinical sites as well as additional education on teaching, how people change, and working with adolescents among other things.

Being a Dietitian is a second career.  My first career was composed with over ten years in industry and consulting.  I provided consulting on process improvement and technology to many large companies before deciding to change careers.  I decided to become a Dietitian so that I could help other people.  I wanted to be in a position where I could positively impact people and make their lives better.  I had always had a passion for fitness and nutrition, so I decided to follow that passion to a new career.

I’m also an athlete.  I became an athlete as an adult with bicycling in my mid-20s.  I began racing bicycles on both the road and velodrome (a bike track) in the mid-1990s.  When work interfered and I was unable to spend the time training for bike racing, I took a couple of years off then began running.  In 2001 I ran the Houston and Marine Corps Marathon in D.C.  Since then I have continued running and cycling.  In the Spring of 2005 I added swimming to my training and decided to try a triathlon.  I've been doing tris ever since.  Here's a list of the triathlons and running events I've completed so far and have planned for 2008:

  • 2008:
    • Lone Star Sprint - Galveston, Tx
    • Memorial Herman's Womens Tri - Sugar Land, Tx; June 22
    • IronBabe (bike leg of relay team) - Houston, Tx; August 17 - Houston

I am also an active volunteer in the community.  I have volunteered with Child Advocates, which gives a voice to abused and neglected children in the court system, for over ten years.  I am also an active member of the Houston Junior League.
